I am a first year high school English teacher and have started blogging as well. I stumbled upon your blog when I was clicking a bunch of random links on Facebook due to a lack of motivation for grading. I have to tell you, I love your blog. There are too many reasons for loving your blog to post here, but the biggest is that I really enjoy your voice. You write stories that make me laugh or let me find a kindred spirit. As a first year teacher, while I have a lot of support in my own school, it can be so nice knowing that not only are there others out there with wacky stories, but that they have similar experiences and techniques as mine (planning lessons "last minute" and teaching to students with wide ranges of abilities are examples). So, thank you so much and i can't wait to read more.
I'm thankful for one of my tough as nails/soft as a kitty/occasionally way too cool for school fifth grade boys. He goes to visit a kindergartner everyday during our breakfast and morning work time. He came in after a weekend and said, "Mr. Stark, (I miss GoT, too) I'm not feelin goin to kindygarten today." I asked why and he told me that his pops didn't show up this weekend.** I told him that that sucked and that the choice was his -- he could stay and eat breakfast and do morning work in our classroom or go hang out with his K buddy. I mentioned that when I feel like junk, what usually helps me most is doing something nice for someone else. It takes my mind off of whatever is bumming me out and also makes me feel good at the same time. He chose to go hang out with his buddy. I saw all smiles the rest of that day. For this kid to make a conscious choice to do something nice for someone else when he's already upset is an absolute milestone. He didn't cure cancer, but he found a way to help himself keep his emotions in check and continue to be a caring, productive member of a community. BIG day for us. **Side note: he watched his father be removed by immigration services from the apartment in which they live a few years ago and hasn't seen him since**
Dang - YES. Amazing.
I know that what you say is true for far to many children in our country. I hope that the telling of the story makes a difference. Your choices as a teacher are tough decisions. I trust the best for you.
I stumbled upon your blog a few days ago and haven't been able to get it of my head. I also teach at a title 1 school but at an early college in Dallas isd. If you're near Disd, apply to be an English 2 teacher at Samuel echs. Working for an echs makes the stresses of a low income district....easier on the soul. Consider it.
Feel free to delete this once you've read it :)

I see you blocked me from you Facebook page. Way to show tolerance and acceptance. I certainly hope you do better in your classroom. Not every student will agree with you today. But given your response to a dissenting point of view, I am sure they have learned to keep quiet if they do. In the interest of educators becoming fully educated. Look up Trumps plan for his first 100 days. It isn't all crudeness, bigotry, and mainstream media. I am disappointed in your response to my comments. Given what you have written, I had expected better from you. D Mary Mudge
Your comment might take awhile to post, but should be up soon! Thanks for your feedback :) L, T
